Hair & Makeup
Transform cast into character with hair and makeup design.

The Impact of Hair and Makeup
Hair and Makeup design completes the transformation that costumes begin. Stage makeup brings the cast member’s features into fullness as they take the stage under bright lights. Makeup design can transform a young teen into an older character–or even into an animal or imaginative character!Â
Before Auditions
Weeks before auditions, the committee chair for Hair and Make-up works with the directors and the other creative committee chairs, to establish the direction for the show’s hair and makeup needs. The directors provide the committee chair with the cast of characters and what will be required. If there is a need for wigs, or special makeup design, the committee chair will begin to plan for the show’s needs.Â
Serving on the Hair & Makeup Committee
Preshow Hair & Makeup Committee
Parent volunteers assigned to the Hair and Makeup Committee will assist the chair in planning for each cast member’s hair and makeup. The chair maintains a notebook with each cast member’s character information and hair/make-up design. The committee chair also orders make-up kits for all cast members who need it, matching their skin tone to the right kit.
The preshow needs for the Hair and Makeup volunteers can vary, depending on the show’s requirements. Often, the biggest need for this committee is during show week, when volunteers assist cast members with fixing their stage hair and make-up.Â
Because there is typically less work to do preshow, parents assigned to the preshow hair and makeup committee will likely also be serving some volunteer hours on another committee. They should plan on learning more from the committee chair at the first parent meeting. Parent volunteers for Hair and Makeup should also plan to be available for the show’s Costume and Props Parade.
Show Week Hair and Makeup Committee
Parent volunteers assigned to the show week Hair and Makeup Committee have unique responsibilities. During the show, volunteers assist with applying stage make-up and fixing hair. They also help cast members with makeup changes they may have during the show (especially when cast members have costume changes or even change to a different character).
Serving on the Hair and Make-up Committee during show week puts parent volunteers into the heart of back-of-house activity. Volunteers work directly with the cast, keep an eye on the show via the video monitor, and have opportunities to be an encouragement to the cast.
