Sets

Construct and paint sets that transport the cast and the audience to a different world.

The Impact of Sets

Set design and construction not only make a huge impact on the audience’s experience, they help the cast to imagine themselves in an entirely different place as entirely different characters. In recent years the Parent volunteers for CPT’s Sets Committee have built Wonka’s chocolate factory and Neverland’s home underground; they have painted River City’s storefronts, tables and benches in the Madison Public Library; they have created a cozy London bedroom for the Darling nursery, a beautiful castle bedroom for Belle, and a dilapidated room for the impoverished Bucket family. The Sets committee creates the setting for the magic of imagination in CPT productions.

Before Auditions

The Sets Committee chair reviews the show’s script and meets with the Artistic Team to learn the vision for the show. The director shares his or her plan for how each scene’s sets should be designed for the show. The Sets Committee chair collaborates with the Artistic Team and recommends the best way to enact the vision and construct the set pieces within the parameters of budget, supplies, resources, and theatre size constraints.

Serving on the Sets Committee

Preshow Sets Committee

Parent volunteers assigned to the Sets Committee will gather during Friday and Saturday rehearsals at the sets warehouse where they will work as a team to build the set pieces and paint them.

We need a big team of volunteers for the Sets Committee, and all skill levels are welcome; all you need is a can-do spirit! Volunteers on the Sets Committee have opportunity to share their skills and creativity in art, design, construction, and problem-solving. Many volunteers discover that they had interests and gifts in set construction they didn’t know they had!

Depending on the needs of our shows, sometimes parents assigned to other committees join our Sets volunteers to lend a hand and serve more of their volunteer hours. If you are assigned to Sets, plan to spend weekend rehearsals with the team at the sets warehouse.

Show Week Sets Committee

The Sets Committee volunteers help with transporting sets to the theatre on Super Saturday, but after load-in, all volunteers transition to their Tech Week parent committee. Although our Sets Committee members often lend a hand during Tech Week with any repairs or changes to set pieces, most Set Committee volunteers pivot to a different committee role for Show Week. Many volunteer on the Backstage Committee.
