Synopsis

Based on the popular comic strip and adapted from the Tony Award-winning Best Musical, with a beloved book and score by Tony Award winners, Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin, Annie JR. features everyone’s favorite little redhead in her very first adventure.

With equal measures of pluck and positivity, little orphan Annie charms everyone’s hearts despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York City. Annie is determined to find the parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of an orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan. Annie eventually foils Miss Hannigan’s evil machinations, finding a new home and family in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary, Grace Farrell, and a lovable mutt named Sandy.

Hope in Christ

Annie Jr. tells the story of a young orphan girl in a New York orphanage during the 1930s Great Depression. Annie longs for her family and is convinced that one day her parents will come for her, that they will be good to her and love her, and all will be well.

Annie’s longing to belong to a loving family is a universal human longing. Those who do have loving families can’t imagine the grief of not having that family, and those who, like Annie, feel alone and unloved, long to belong in a family.

Although things look bleak for Annie, she wears a locket around her neck that is a symbol of her hope for a future where she is no longer separated from her mother and father who love her. Because of that hope, she perseveres through difficult times with a smile of joy on her face.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Annie’s story resonates with us because it taps into something deep in the human experience: the desire to belong to a Father who loves us unconditionally.

Like Annie, we are separated from our Heavenly Father, our Creator. It is our sin that leaves us far off from the God who created us, knows us, and loves us. It is our sin that leads us to try to fill that longing with all sorts of counterfeits rather than turning to Him in humble repentance.

But God has given us hope in His Son Jesus, who, when we place our trust in Him, brings us near to God, reconciling us to God through His death and resurrection. Because of Jesus, we can be filled with hope for an eternal future where all of our deepest longings are fulfilled, where we are adopted as children of God, and are never again separated from our Heavenly Father.

But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

Annie is adopted by Daddy Warbucks. She becomes his beloved child. His home is her home–she dwells with him. This same happy ending is promised to those who believe in Christ. They become children of God, full of joy and hope knowing that He promises that we will one day dwell with Him forever, and all wrongs will be righted, all tears wiped away.
