Synopsis
One of the most popular Disney movies of all time is capturing hearts in a whole new way: as a practically perfect musical! Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, Cameron Mackintosh and Disney’s Mary Poppins delighted Broadway audiences for over 2,500 performances and received nominations for nine Olivier and seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
The jack-of-all trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family members how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it.”
Transformation
Mary Poppins is the story of a family transformed by the arrival of a magical nanny, Mary Poppins, who, arriving with the east wind, comes to the aid of Jane and Michael, by bringing a much-needed epiphany to Mr. Banks, who discovers that he needs to re-order his life around what matters most: his family.
Like Mr. Banks, we need the truth about ourselves revealed to us. We need to turn away from the wrong pursuits in life and turn toward what is true and good. Although we can’t expect a magical nanny to bring that kind of self-revelation to us, we can look to the Holy Spirit for conviction and transformation– and when the Spirit moves in our hearts, we can be born again in Christ.
Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. . . .You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
John 3:3, 7-8
As we tell this delightful story of imagination and heart change, we hope that our cast and audience will reflect on what change they need in their hearts, and how Christ offers that to them when they trust in Him.
Our Creator calls us to live transformed lives–transformed from our sinful nature and born again into new life in Christ.
