Synopsis
L. Frank Baum’s beloved story of a young girl’s adventure in a magical land has been entertaining audiences for over a century. MGM’s blockbuster 1939 film adaptation, featuring the timeless songs of Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, along with the brilliant instrumental music of Herbert Stothart, elevated the popular novel to even greater heights. This stage adaptation, featuring the characters and celebrated songs from the film, brings the wondrous Land of Oz to life in a jubilant theatrical experience.
Join Dorothy and her loyal companion Toto as they “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” through the Land of Oz, determined to reach the Emerald City, where the great and powerful Wizard of Oz will help them get home. Of course, along the way, Dorothy encounters witches (both good and bad), Munchkins, talking trees and winged monkeys. But most importantly, she befriends three unique characters: a Scarecrow with no brain, a Tin Man with no heart, and a Lion with no “nerve.” Their journey to happiness – and self-awareness – is a glowing testament to friendship, understanding and hope in a world filled with both beauty and ugliness.
The Wizard of Oz: Youth Edition is a one-hour adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, specially tailored for elementary and middle school-aged actors.
Seeking the Way Home
Dorothy Gale finds herself in an astonishing predicament after a tornado sweeps her away from her Kansas home. She has landed in another world entirely, and there doesn’t appear to be a way to get back home. Dorothy thinks that the Wizard of Oz will be able to help her find her way home, so she embarks on a quest to reach the Wizard, following the yellow brick road to Emerald City.
What Dorothy ultimately discovers is that all along she had what she needed to get home: the ruby slippers on her feet. But as Glinda says to the Scarecrow, “She had to learn it herself.”
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'"
Matthew 22:37
We’re just like Dorothy. We have a problem that we can’t solve ourselves, and like Dorothy we look for answers in the wrong places.
We have the Bible, the Word of God, which is sufficient for all that we need for salvation. In it we read, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16), which tells us how to be saved from our sin. And we read, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37), which tells us how we ought to live our life loving God fully.
The Lord shows himself to us as we journey through life, and sometimes we have to go through some adversity before we turn our eyes to Him in faith.
About the Wicked Witch and the Good Witch
The Wizard of Oz is an imaginative, or fantasy, story. Dorothy is taken from the “real” world into the world of Oz, where she finds fantastical things, like munchkins, trees that come alive, talking animals, flying monkeys, and witches.
Much like a fairy tale, The Wizard of Oz contains human and non-human characters as well as natural and supernatural events. Also like a fairy tale, The Wizard of Oz has a very clear framework of good and evil, right and wrong, and what is important. The witches in the story help to make these contrasts clear.
Glinda the Good Witch is a kind and benevolent witch who watches over Dorothy and kindly helps her. The Wicked Witch of the West is a selfish and vengeful witch who opposes Dorothy at every turn. In the world of The Wizard of Oz, there is a clear contrast between what is good and what is evil. Our heroine Dorothy must fight evil and seek what is good. She also must learn to value what is important: a brain, a heart, courage, and home.
Back on the farm in the real world of Kansas, the fairy tale elements of the story are left behind in the land of Oz. Dorothy’s dream is just a memory, but in it she learned to guard against evil and value what is important.
About the Show Verse
Our show verse is Matthew 22:37: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” A Christian’s heart, soul, and mind belong to the Lord, and we ought to love him fully with all of our being. In The Wizard of Oz, we meet the Scarecrow, who needs a brain to be whole; and we meet the Tin Man, who needs a heart to be whole; and we meet the Lion, who needs courage–a soul–to be whole. Our minds (brains), our hearts, and our souls belong to the Lord, our Creator.
